NEW ZEALAND AND FIJI.
JIR BERKELEY'.S ALLEGATIONS DENIED. United Preei Aesociation—By Electric Telegraph— Copyright. (Received February 4th, 10.44 a»ni.) MELBOURNE, February 4. Sir £. Barton, interviewed in connection •with .Mr Hurapkroy Berkeley's statement •witJi regard to Fiji, i«aid that he had no reason to believe the complaints were in any way justified, nor was there any evidence of the popular feeling in Fiji being in favour of immodiato annexation by New Zealand. The people of Fiji, both black and white, do not appear io evince any desire to more in thai direction. It was easy io make charges, out it was harder to substantiate them. It was not very difficult to produce petitions from coloured people for any alleged grievance.
