SYDENHAM. There v<Te present at the Sydenham Borough Council's meeting last night, the Mayor (Mr J. B. Sim), and Cra. Forrester, Bowden, Jones, Webb, Miller, Parson, McMeehan, Smith, Clifford, Hadfield, ami Johnson. A petition, which was received from several ratepayers, asking the Council to asphalt -the south side of Macaulay street, was referred to the Works Oommiitttfd. The lion, secretary ,of tie Sydenham Fire-Brigade wrote advaiag the election of Mr W. Fabain as superintendent. Tihe appointment was approved. Mr W. J. Brown, of Gifimock, near Glasgow, wrote stating tihat test bars had been cast from each melting of iron for the Council's water pipes, and had been subjected to the transverse breaking etrain of 30cwt., and the deflection had been noted from each bar.. Daily record of work wae received, and would be forwarded on completion of the contract. He was arranging for the valves, etc., to be tested by an engineer in London. The letter was referred to the Water Supply Committee. The Works Committee reported that they had informed the ratepayers In Hawkesbury street that the asphalting of the footpjuth in the street could cot be carried out thk season. The Committee recommended that an offer of Mrs J. Rennell to cell the part of her property required for widening Disraeli street be accepted. The By-Lows Committee, in theix report, recommended that the application of Mr J. Jones for permission to erect a shop close to the corner of Selwyn street and Burke street be accepted, subject to his executing an agreement to remove the buikling and to widen Burke street five feet when required. The Finance Committee reported that during the last fortnight the reodpte bad amounted to £622 10s 7d. £248 2s Id was recommended , foV payment. The following accounte were in credit: — Separate account £839 19s Id, interest account £1230 3s 10d, and loaiw account £3058 2s 7d, total £5128 5s 6d. The general account was £5413 13s lid in debit.
