It ia probable that Mr R. Wardrop, late of Ceylon, will receive the appointment of supervisor of the. fruit industry in the Cook Islands. Several letters to the Editor, tadudisg communications f«ira "ZeaJkndia," Mr O. T. J. Alpers, and another correspondent on the Patdbaka question, are held over for want of space until to-morrow. Our Wellington correspondent telegraphs that Mr Ayson'e report to the Government, it is understood, <woll be favourable to the setting of trout in L«ke EUseaere under certain restrictions. Oα Saturday afternoon an alarm of fir* was given at winner, line Brigade torned out smartly, but fortunately their services were not required. The prosperity of St. Albans is evidenced unmistakably in the borough's present credit balance of £1820 14* lid, «• shown in the report of the Finance Ootnmittle last trigai. This time six years Ago the Council had a debit balance of £1100. The paragraph in yesterday's i*«ue, stating that Saturday was the last day upon which city ratepayer! could escape the 10 per cent, impost on overdue rates- was somewhat misleading. A few days' grace •till remain. , The new foot bridge over the v river at Antigua street lias been completed, and will be open for traffic sibortly. It will be lib by a gas light Iα the middle of the structure. At present the approaches tub either end of the bridge are being put in order- ' Over one hundred eisays have bees received in competition lor the prizes offered by Mr JLndexson for a- descriptive essay on Lord! Neluoo and the Battle of Trafalgar. The names of the euooewfirl essayists will be announced! from the stage to-night. Engineer I>olman, of the Ashburton Fire Brigade, has been appointed Engineer for the Lichfield street Fire Brigade Station. Mr Dolman has-been for fourteen years in charge of the engine at Ashburton, and for over twenty years a member of the Brigade. It is anticipated that all the Canterbury members of the House of Representatives, with, the exception of two or three, will be present at the Conference to be held to-morrow in the City Council library, lion. W. Hall-Jones, Minister of Public Works, and . Captain E. Heaton Rhodes (who is absent from the colony), are expected to be the only members who will not be present/ All doubts as to Madame Melba carrying out her New Zealand tour may now bs considered dm beyond questiop (tele* graphs our Dunedia correspondent). Mr 0. Barnes, who woe recently in this city with Musgrove's Comio Opera Company, arrived at the Bluff by the Monow&i yesterday, and advises the Dunedin "Star" that he will make the preliminary arrangements for the visit. According io the "Otego Daily Times , ' the special moil train that came through from Chrittchurch on Thursday sight bad a miiahap near Shag Point, where the driving-rod of the engine broke. Fortunately the driver and the fireman noticed the occurrence, and -tihe engine was speedily pulled up and repairs effected. The passengei* .were very grateful to ti» lady who, noticing tho accident from * neighbouring house, supplied them •with tea ana edible* while they were waiting. , It will be remembered that at the time of the Elingamite wreck the unfortunate people who were on the raft, declared alter their rescue that on the Monday or Tuesday night after the wreck a small steamer came close to them and stopped for some time, but failed to pick the raft up. In conversation with Captain Aas, of the auxiliary schooner Tortagen, which has just arrived at Auckland from Woolongong, a "New Zealand Herald" reporter learned tbol the vessel seen by those on the raft wm the Tortagen. The vessel was bound from Newcastle to Qisborne with a cargo of coal on the occasion, and was liPthe vicinity of the Three Kings when the Elingamite was wrecked. On the sight in question the weather come on very thick, ana Captain Aas decided to stop and take soundings, so as to be sure, of bjs positioo. This took somewhere about twenty minutes, at the expiry of which the vessel stood on her course again, the crew littte knowing that men in the most desperate strait* pcesible were so near in need of aasstaace, which would hat* been willingly rendered had their near presence been known at toe
