LYTTELTON. THEFT OP LEAD.
At Lyttelton yerterday, before Hours J. Grubb *e<l S. R. Webb, j.P.'e, Haiiry Beef-h and Henry Stiver appeared on remand to answer a cjiarge of having stolen a drum of white lead from the Eliza Pirtih. •Mr BeewSck defended Stiver, wiho pleaded not guflty. Beedh, had already pleaded guilty. Constable Co nnel deposed that he arrested tihe aooused on t&e night of the 28tk. Stiver had am overcoat with somethdAg tuukr it. He hurried away into » rigraWrf-'way off London street. Something dropped, and witnee* picked it up." It wae the tin of paint produced. SUver denied having dropped it. Later Stiver said he mett. a sailor from the Morning Light, wao gave him the tin. Ohariga Johamaen, mate of toe BKza Firth, could not swear to tbe drum of paint produced. Mr i>eswick called Stiver, who deposed that on Wednesday night Beech offered to giv» him some paint. They botlh' went to th« wharf, where Beech carded it quite openly from tie ehig. When Constable Connel arrested him 'h* said, "I've got you thi* time." After hearing more evidence the Bencu found both accused guilty, and fined each of them 40, with the alteMnative of a montih'e ianpriecaianent. ALLEGED ASSAULT. Two lade, named WilMam Sohenkel and , John Jonee, were charged with assaulting John Didulich, another Boy, for whom Mr Beswick aippeared. A cjuantity of evidence was 'beard by tihe Bench, who diemieaed the accused with a caution.
