THE BATTALION CAMP.
Lieufcmant-OoOonel Webb, officer commanding the district, inspected bhe camp of -the North Canterbury Infantry Battalion at the Addington. Show Gtaounde la*t aiglifc. Most of the oompanw* were engaged in outpost trank, mod Colonel Webb inspected the various ©utposte, and appeared satisfied with the mxric done. - This afternoon a military tournament i> to be held in connection with the ceinp. and the various items promise to be well contested. The events will be run in front of tie grand stand, and amongst the contests t>be squad drill and route marching should i p«>TO interesting. The (iaiTison Band will ': be in attendance, aad contribute a musical programme. The tournament commencee at 2.A0 p.ai. To-naorix»w afternoon, *at 6 o'clock there will be a church, paxode, wibich will be conducted by Bishop Julius. In local volunteering circles there is considerable speculation as to tie officer who vr'tl succeed Ldeutenant-Colonel Webb to tite command of the , district. Tbe name of Cagtain Hobday, at present District Adjutant, is mentioned as Colonel Webb's successor, and it is reported that his appointment would give general satisfaction. Ano-" ther officer whose name is mentioned in connection with the vacancy is that of Major JT. L. DA. Smith, at present Acting Staff-Officer to the Commandant of the New Zealand Forcee, and who is weHknown in this city, having at one time been in command of tie College Rifles. So far as can be ascertained locally, no intimation has , been received as to who will succeed Lseuten»nt-Colone£ Webb.
