CAMBRIDGE TERRACE PUMPING STATION.
EXPLANATION BY THE DRAINAGE BOARD'S ENGINEER.
The announcement published in our co!Tro ns on Saturday that the Chrietchuren pr»inage Board intended to proceed with tfie erection of a pumping station on th; Brer bank reserve, just opposite the Pub]jo Library, came ag an unpleasant surprise to those who take an interest in the work yi beautifying the city. Mr K. CuthberE, the engineer to the Chlistciiurch Drainage Board, explained to a "Press ,, representative on Saturday tjactly what, the Board intends to do at that particular s£Ot. It appears that the jevsl of the drainage pipes in the locality ef the .Public Library is some three and a lab* feet below the general level of the pipes in the other parts of the city, ani for this reason the flow through the pipes csanot be induced by the force of gravity. Consequently, the drainage matter hae <o lie forced' along the pipes, and a email 'lumping plant is what is required to do ti»e work. This pumping plant will be erected on the reserve at the corner of Cambridge terrace and Hereford street, at A point immediately opposite the readingroom of the Public Library. Mr CutliUrt aeeuied our representative that the {mmping plant would take up but little fpaoe, and , would be covered in by an ornamental structure, probably octagonal in shape, of about eight feet in diametor ■ami about the same in hwighl. The plant will be put in with little trouble, and ■with practically no damage to the shrubt), etc.,'on the reserve. The pump will be ■worked by electricity, generated by the "city destructor.
