A NEW ELECTORAL POINT.
TEE RESIDENTIAL QUALIFICATION.
' (PBXSS ASSOCIATION , TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, January 24. Mr Haselden gave judgment in the PoliceCouit to-day in the case of King (Registrar of Electors) v Wing. TSie defendant* was charged with having, knowingly and wilfully, made a false statement of claim for enrolment for Grey Lynn, declaring he had resided in the colony for twelve months. The facts 'were, that defendant came to New Zeaload when a child, and lived here until 1899, when he went to Australia, returning in Jx£v, 1902, to Grey Lynn, and residing there three months prior to the declaration.
The question the Magistrate had to decide -was whether tia-e person who resided a year in the colony at one time of his life wae qualified as tin elector if he subsequently resided three months in an electoral district-
The Magistrate held that a person must not only reside m the el«Joral district for tim three months immediately preceding his claim, but mast also reside in the colony one year immediately preceding his olaiin/This is the first time this point has been raised in the colony.
