To-day is the second anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria. H_.LS. Archer, at present in Lyttelton Harbour, will leave for Auckland to-morrow. A man was arrested at Temuka yesterday, on a charge of having stolen a watch and other jewellery, of a, total value of £2 12s. The Prohibition party in Timaru have already,, started the campaign for the next licensing poll. A public meeting was held in Timaru on Monday might, at which ad_xe_KH were delivered by the Rev. T. An alarm was given,, but the fire was extingui-hed without the aid of the Fine Briga_e plant. The crops in the __k__iere district never looked better, reports our correspondent, and if the weather is favourable a record harvest will be .reaped. A crop of barley has been cut and t_res_ed at Elkwmert, and several early crops of oats have been cut. A grocer had a cask of vinegar with a leaking tap, and his assistant placed under it a clean galvanised iron bucket to catch tho drops. Th* assistant also supplied a customer with a bottle of vinegar taken from the backet, but the appearance of thrt liquid was -uc_ that the customer and member- o. Jh_r hou_e_o3d did not do much more than taste it. They became ill, and an analysis made by the Colonial Arutlyiat showed that the vinegar in t_e.ca-k was all right, but that a -ample from the bucket contained zinc in s-lution, through the Vinegar iiaving dissolved the metal of the bucket.
