HDTT TRAINING NOTES. (SI'ECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") WELLINGTON, January 20. Quite n. number of spectators were on the track this morning, including a fair sprinkling of local bookmakers. They were rewarded by witnessing a sensational gallop, put up by Advance and Achilles. The weather was perfect, and the •track* extraordinarily fast. Higgott and Cutta were the first to take advantage of the* tracks, just after four o'clock. Cannie Chiel had the beat of Hinetaura in a once round gallop, the southern representative going remarkably well. Hately and Mauaerine worked together over two rounds, Hately showing the beat. Ringlet and Ringnxan, finished together over six furlongs on the tan in Imm IBsec. I/olah held Gkdeome safa in, a five furlong spin on the tan in lmin 4scc. Queen'e Guard went a steady round. Ostiak (C. Jenkins) beat Golden Brown (Price) by three lengths from the half mile post in Slsec. Lavalette Tan five rurlonge on, the tan jn lmin 4sec. Dundee, looking muscular and fit, galloped a jnile and a quarter on the tan, the round taking lmin 53isec, and the mile lmin 47sec. Clovelly took 54sec to regotiate half a mile on the outside, by himself. Aldinga looked to have the best of Pure Silver over a, similar course. Orlofl sprinted on the tan in good style. Siege Gun waa not asked to do much, cantering a l'ound and then negotiating another at a- serviceable pace. Hβ moved very short, but those who know the horse consider no notice is to be taken of hia •eoreness, which ia apparently chronic. All eyes were turned on Advance (C. Jenkins) and Achilles (G. Price) when they, stepped on the track to gallop outside of the poles. Both bore a welltrained appearance. They were taken to the Thompson milo post to start, but, J>eing fractious, were sent off behind the' post, and reached it at full pace. Achilles had to be hauled back to Advance in the first couple of furlongs; but tho pair th«n came on together, with Advance on the outside. They finished together, both running well within themselves. The watch showed lmin 44sec. Tho first half mile was run in oOaec, the six furlongs in lmin 16sec, and the last half in 54sec. Both horses had their shoes on. They finished their tasks well, end it was a really excellent gallop, the best of the season, if not the record for the course, and it proves that Advance lias not iost any of his brilliancy by hia enforced retirement, his wind is not affected as much as was thought, and his ch&iice in tho Cup looks a rosy one. Red Gauntlet and Canteen, were about a match over five furlongs on the tr.n in lmin 3 4-51 h sec. Both the Dunedin representatives look really well. Torowai finished in front of Dodoua from the five furlor.g post in lmin ssec. Menura stepped round in pleasing style. Betsy had, the best of Gipsy Jack and Livonia in a sLs furlong spin on the cutside in lmin "2Csec. liohoro, who blew far more than Advance, s.ippcd over half a mile on the tan in 50 3-sth sec. Battleaxe made his appe&rance, looking big and well. He was restricted to easy paeirg. Kowhete moved troeiy in half-pace work. Motor ran once round on the ten in lmin 52isec, ridden out. Field Battery picked him up at the five furio:igs and brought him home nicely. Wird sprinted a few furlongs. Quiver, under pressure, beat Waihi over five furlong's. VVeatguard finished strcr.gly in sprinting exercise. Pallas was led on the rein several rounds at a trot on the sacd track. Waikfjuie, Narcotic, Turcpo. Idea, Windwhistle. Some-red. Petrovna, Gold Seal, Eiibank, The Guesser, and Treadmill did serviceable work.
