WELLINGTON, January 20.
For the past two or three years a movement towards a Greater Wellington, by the amalgamation of the borough of Meirose wiUi the city, lias been in progress. The negotiations have been very slow, but now at β-eemy that ideas of the promotion of 'he scheme are on the eve of being successfully carried into effect. It was aniioiuuvd at <i. n:e.?ihv,' of the Melrose Borough Council to-night that an agreement hud been arrived , a:, as to the basis of amalgamation of the two districts. Tli'i Melrose Council has obtained the consent of the city—(l)' To tax each ward of the former borough for the extension of tramways iuto such ward's, instead' of taxing tihe whole borough, as was -vi first proposed; (2) concession to»levy city rates for water and drainage, as against a tax for the- ac■tuall cost ; (3) concession to expend £30,000 for street improvement in the borough. Arrangements will be made next week to take a poll of the ratepayers on the proposals.
