FIRE BRIGAPRS' COMPETITION.

The competition of the Canterbury fire brigades was carried out at Lancaster Park on Saturday, and the I«*gLhy programme ■was only just completed before <Luk. The entries were numerous, but the time which vras .necessarily occupied in getting the gear xeady for-, the next learn robbed many good runs of much of the public interest. The prizes wer© •practically divided between the two ChristchuJ-cft Brigade, and tie visitors hailing from Ashbunton, who certainly possess" some first-olass material. The manual work by the ladies' team was exceedingly well done, and the eeven young ladiee engaged, who were attired in neat blue serge uniforms, with, red teimmdngs, accomplished tiheir task in a pleading style, getting water on in the very creditable time of 39 2-sth sec. The team was heartily applauded by the spectators, .and after driving round the ground on a fire engine, the coachman being a member of the team, the young ladies were presented with silver medals, the presentation being made hj Mr A. Lougtoey. The exhibition work by the Buroham, boys was, on the whole, fairly done, but both teams bad trouble with tiheir couplings, and the fastest team finished in 58 3-stih sec, or 19sec behind the ladies' team. Superintendent Smith gave the silver medals both, for the ladies' team and the winning team of Burnhani boye, and both eveme were items an the programme. The members of the Chester street Itoe Brigade, wiho won theMaxmal Engine for five men, in the very creditable time of 41 3-sth sec, were Messrs C. Blaie, C. Alillington, N. Chapman, W. Chapman, and W. Carr, the Aehburton team, which was second, being Messrs J. Dorm, J. Rule, J. Hilgrove, J. Stephens, and F. NichoHs, and the extraordinary agility of the iwo former, who are distinctly heavy-weights, woo them favourable comment in f<he Reecue event. The fire an-gine belooging to the St. Albans Borough 'Council did all the pumping required, and the Brass Band belonging to the Bumham School discoureed some very pleasant music during the afternoon. Following are the results:— ' idanual Jingino (dry), 1 man; first prize £1 and trophy, eccond prize, 15a—E. Borough (Christchurch), 33 l-sth see. X; W. Jordan (Rangiora), 36sec, 2. Tea others oompeted. Coupling Evont, for Two Men; first prize £2, second prize £I—E. £. Borough and W. Jurise, liichfieid street, Christchuroh, 42»ec, 1; J. Pope «nd G. Bueeell, Sydenham 44 3-sth see, 2. .Nineteen others competed. The winners carried a penalty of lsec, and the eecond team 2sec.
