According to a telegram from Inveroargill, received yesterday, there is a prospect of good weather in the Southland district, with sunshine. The past season has been the most inciement in the history of the settlement. For a' fortnight past the Waiau river, near Parnassus, has been impassable, except by swimming. On Saturday Mr A. W. Rutherford, M.H.R., received a telegram stating that a waggon had crossed the river. The train went via Eyreton and Oxford and the Gorge bridge, and, leaving Otarama at 6.5 p.m. returned by way of Sheffield and RoUeston. The weather wae fine, and the picnic paity had,an enjoyable day's outing. The popularity of Hanmer ac « health and holiday resort ia evident in the fact that at the Sanatorium two and even three persona have had to be refused admission every day for weeks past. At present a number of visitors are being accommodated with "shakedowns," and the varioue lodging houses are. almost without exception, similarly crowded. In addition to this, numerous camping patties have eeconced themselves in many of the nooke and gul- ; lies, round about the townehip. The North Canterbury district crop* maintain their healthy and prolific appearance (writes our correspondent). The greater part will be lei* in ripening, though doxm very early fields of oats have been leaped. Up to the present hot eunj shine has been required to advance the i wheat crops. A light north-west wind would probably do no harm in drying the I toot moisture, which is retarding the ripening of the straw and the maturing of tin grain. Hay crops have been lately secured in good condition. Turnip, beat), and potato crops are healthy looking and forward. •> At the meeting in the square on Saturday night Mr E.
