AUSTRALIA AND IMPERIAL DEFENCE.

A CONTROVERSY AT HOME

A COLD-BLOODED SUGGESTION.

United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received January 16th, 9.14 a.m.) LONDON, January 15. -An animated newspaper correspondence is proceeding between Senator Mathieson, Sir Frederick Yoang. Sir Henry Loring (sic), (?Sir Henry Goring), the Hon. H. Copeland, the New South Wales Agent-General, and others, over the Australian attitude regarding Imperial naval defence. Sir Henry Goring's suggestion that Britain ought, after three yeans' notice, to renounce her present responsibility in regarrt to the safety of the autonomous colonies, at the came time giving an indication of her willingness to consider proposals for joint responsibility, is generally condemned.

The Hon. H. Copeiand ridiculed such a "cold-blooded proposal." He eaid he was confident that Australasias reply would be in favour of separation when it was safe aad she was quite able to resist a foreign invasion.
