ENGLISHWOMAN ELECTED J.P.
America has gone one better than the rest of the world again by electing a woman justice of the peace. The selection was made at the recent election by the Wyoming electors, who chose Mre Mary Anna Garrett, late of Biraiiing'iiaan, for the honourMrs Garrett is a woman of forty-nine, who lias been a resident of the district electing her fox sixteen years, during which time she has acted as postmistress, as notary-public, conducted a large and successful ranch, and founded the town bearing her name, which has just returned hereto .office. Even before leaving En,glan<3hin 1884 she took a great interest in politics, and after removing to America became one of the champions of woman's rights, playing a prominent part in the fight for the franchise finally extended to Wyoming women in 1890.
