Thirty degrees of frost have been registered in Scotland, and the weather is very severe in Great Britain and on the Continent. NEW YORK, January 14. The coal famine in tlie United States, combined with the bittei'.y cold weather, is causing much suffering amongst all classes. Seven people were frozen to death in Chicago.
The Ways and Means Committee of both Houses has reported in favour of granting a rebate equal to the duty on imparted cool for the year.
Coat, operators agree to supply New York retailers at five dollars a ton, if they sell to the poor at ten cents per pailful.
Mr Mitchell, secretary of the Coat Miners' Federation, has advised the anthracite Miners' Unions to increase the production until the weather moderates. (Received January 15th, 11.10 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 15. Congress almost unanimously passed the Rebate of Coal Duty Bill.
