A SOUTH AUSTRALIAN VISITOR.
Mr John CressweE, manage? of the National Fire and Marine Insurance Company at Adelaide, where he also holds the position of secretary to the Chamber of Commerce and the South Australian Cricket Association, is at present in this city, and left for Sydney last night. In a brief chat with a respresenta'.ive of "The Press," Mr Cresswell 6aid he did not see Why a reciprocity treaty should not exist between New Zealand and South Australia, although such a treaty could not now be entered into except with the approval of the Federal Parliament. He m.t many in New Zealand who complained that they could not get Australian wines at reasonable prices, owing to the duty levied on them. He also failed to sea why South Australian grapes should be subject to duty, as they could be landed and sold much cheaper than .ocally produced grapes. They were anticipating one of the .argtst vintages ever experienced in the State. Referring to the South Australian wheat harvest, he said that it wae estimated that after providing for local requirements, they would have 150,000 tons for export. The corn section of the Adelaide Chamber of Commerce had fixed the standard of wheat at 631b to the imperial bushel- Consequent on the experiments in growing wheat instituted by Professor Lowrie, now of Lincoln College, farmers in South Australia were getting 30 busihe/.s per acre from low land that previously only yielded 10 bushels. He referred to Marshal Brothers' lust-resisting wheat, and said that there was no doubt that it did resist the ravages of that scourge. Regarding his New Zealand trip, he expressed the opinion that if Australians generally knew the reasonable fares charged, and the enjoyment that the trip affords, we should have more visitors from the "other side" than we have at present.
