TRAMWAY BOARD ELECTION.
The state of comparative apathy with regard to the Tramway Board Election which existed a few weeks ago has fortunately given place to something approaching animation end interest, and itwill be seen from the nominations which we publish in another column, that there is quite a keen competition for the seats on the Board. Thds is as it should be. We should hare despaired of anything like a municipal patriotic spirit ewer being evolved in Christ-church and its suburbs had a matter so intamately affecting the prosperity of the daftrict been allowed to pass with no more display of public interest than the ordinary municipal elections have elicited in the past. We hope this is the beginning of a better state of things, and that in future, especially if Greater Chrietchurch becomes an accomplished fact, we shall see tibe ratepayers giving thai attention to municipal politics which their importance demands. It as especially gratifying to see on the present occasion that a number of leading business men have consented to place their services at tbe disposal of the district. We hope that these gentlemen will be elected by substantial majorities, co as to encourage similar candidates to come forward more freely in the future. The construction, maintenance, and running of an electric tramway is an important commercial undertaking, necessitating business prudence, judgment, and foresight on the part of ihme responsible for Hβ success. The ratepayers will do well to select those candidates who have shown their possession of these qualities in the conduct of their own affairs. We oaimot do better, perhaps, on the present occasion than repeat the advice which we gave the ratepayers in a, former article on this subject. Let them remember that they are practically shareholders in a tramway company, with a large Eability, and let them elect from the candidates the men whom they would choose as directors. of the company if they were taking up chores in the ordinary way.
