PERSONAL ITEMS.

Sir J. G. Ward arrived from Wellington by the Rotomabana yesterday, and went on to Dunedin by the express. Hβ will probably return by this evening'e express and continue his journey right through, to Wellington the same evening. Sir Joseph was accompanied to Christchurch by his son and Mr B. Wilson (private secretary). Mr Ward did not go further south. Mr J. Murrell was a passenger from the North on Monday night. The Rev. Father Devoy arrived from Wejington yesterday Jmiortningf. Mr H. G. Ell, M.H.R., left for Ashburton yesterday. Mr A. Olliver, Chicago, went South 3"e*rterdiiy morning. Mr J. C. Maddison, who lias been on a visit North, returned l by the Rotomahiana yesterday morning. Mr and Mrs H. W. Reid, of Christchurcb, ■were passengers to Hanmer by yesterday morning's train. Mr P. Coira, of Temuka, is in town. Mr W. C McDouall, manager of te Oamaru branch of the National Bank, wiho is going to Sydney on six months' leave, to undergo an operation of the throat, was yesterday presented with, a. purse of 144 sovereigns. Visitors to town include:—Mr John U. Hajes (England), Mr F. Leitch. (Dunedin), Mr George Roberts, Mr A. Napenaire, Mr K. Beaunoir, Mr E. W. Van Lenden, Mr A. A. Brown (Cincinatti), Mr F. Mace (Wellington), Mr and Mrs J. D, Dixon (Wellington), Mr Barrow, Mr F. J. Milton (Methven), Mr H. Acton-Adams, Mr R. Friedlander (Ashburton), Mr SeouUar, Mr Swift, Mr Whittingham, and Mr Pearoe. A very pleasant ceremony took place last evening on the railway platform, when Mr J. J. Baker was presented with a purse of sovereigns on the occasion of hie leaving the railway service to take up a position in Wellington. Visitors at Hanmer Springs are:—Mr and Mrs J. Gray (Christohurch), Mise Beresford, Miss Mulligan, Mrs and JUiss Langford, Mr J. Henry (Greendole), Mr Thomas (Sydenham), Mr Jewise (Christ - church), Mr Wilson, Mrs Atack, and Masfor L. Macfarlane (Kaiwarra).
