Hβ was bred by the hvte Ihike oi Westminster in the year 1877, and was by the eon of StockWeil, Itoncaater, who in 1873 .also woa the Derby. Bend Or's dam was Rouee Rose, a in&re by 'ihormanby ou» of Eilen xiorne. When Bond Or won the AJerby of 1880 there were some exciting incidents connected with the race. Ho vra* ridden by the great English jockey. F. Archer, who just managed to beat Robert the Devil, but there were those that averred that the latter had won. A discredited etory was told that Bend Or was not what he waa represented to be, but wae Tadcaater, the groom having chsmged the foa.e, but this etory was without real foundation. The objection, however, waa lodged by the owner of Robert the jJevil against Bend Or, on the ground that he 'had been wrongly deacribed. but there is no doubt the.', tie story had emanated from a, groom actuated by spite. After investigation the complaint wae dismissed by the Epsom stewards, and there is no doubt that iiend Or wag the son of Doncaster and Rouge Roae. In the same year Bend Or won the St. James's Palace .Stakes, beaticß Fernandez and others. He was beaten out of a place :ii the St. Leeer Stakes, won by Robert the Devil, but in the Second Great Foal Stakes, in the same season, he had his battle over again with Robert the Devi], who beat him this time by a Head. Once again .Robert the Devil made Bend Or taste defeat in the Champion Stakes in the October ■.Newmarket '.Meeting, but on this occasion Robert the Devil's victory waa an easy one, aa Bend Or, although he finished second, was ten lengths away. In Hay of hie fourth year Bend Or added the Epsom Gold Cup to his victories, beatinc ■Robert the Devil at even we:ghta. At the Xewmarket October Meeting he won the Champion Stakes with 9.?t 4:-b, Scobell, Bst 41b, being .second, and Iroquois. Set 4ib, third. This was the year hi which Iroquois won the Derby. After Bend Or retired to the stud he got many good torses, anion ff thorn being Ormonde, winner of the Derby in 1886. Last season in England the progeny of matrons by Bend Or earned more money than the mares of any other sire on the turf. He was represented by twenty-six matrons, whose progeny won £40,351. The famous filly Seerptre, a descendant of Bend Ot through her dam Ornament, during the season just closed, won the sum of £23,137. !
