LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.
A LARGE AREA TO BE THROWN OPEN.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
WELLINGTON, January 9. A proclamation in to-night's "Gazette" shows that there will shortly be a tremendous area of land opened for selection. The following areas are announced:—Agricultural! 268,000 acres. Pastoral — Canterbury, 640,000; Marlborough, 157,644; Otago, 13,500; Southland, 11,500; Westland, 61,700. Total;' 1,152,344 acres. In the Auckland province blocks will be thrown open in Kawbia North and South, Maungamangero, Tutamoe, Hokianga, Tauranga, Puketapu, Karaogahape, Wharepapa, Whakatane, Rotorua, Mongonui, Taupo, Opotiki. The Canterbury lands are pastoral runs in Waimate, Geraldine, Ma-ken - zie, Ashburton, and Ashley Counties, varying ia size from 5400 to 50,000 acres. Other Otago runs are in Waitafci, Maniototo, Taieri, Vincent, Tuapeka, and Waihemo. In Marlborough the Leatham, Raglan, Molesworth, and Patriarch Survey Districts are tapped.
