WOOLBTON CORONATION BATH
MEETING OF RESIDENTS.
About thirty Woolston residents assembled at the local Oddfellows' Hall last evening, to discuss the question of the- public school swimming bath, which it was desired to erect in memory of the Coronation.
The chairman* (Mr W. W. Tanner, M.H.K.) said he was sorry the attendance was not larg?, and asked the Mayor of WooLsum (Mr John Richardson) to address the meeting.
Mr Richardson explained the steps which had been taken in connection with the movement, and stated that a quarter of an acre site had been eecured adjoining the school. The lowest tender received for tlte work, however, was considerably more than had been estimated, and with tha Government subsidy there would still be a deficit of £115. The question to be considered was whether the residents would make up the deficiency by voluntary subscriptions, now that the* Council had gone as far as it had. Steps would have to be commenced at once, as the tim*J limit for claiming the Government subsidy would expire on March 31st. Mr J. Cleworth, chairman of the Woolston -cuool Committee, emphasised the usefulness of the bath, and the smallness of the sum required. Already he had promises of £15 15s from intending life members. The Council deserved great credit for voting £200 towards the bath, and he hoped Hurt residents would do the rest. Mr S. B. Andrews urged a careful canass of the district, which he thought would aise the sum in two days. Contributors might be given a household ticket for a year It return for £1 subscriptions. "Don't letIs muss a house," ho concluded. "It •pesn't matter what bis creed is, or wlutt Mis character is; He wants washing, and #c should get him to subscribe." | In reply to a question, the Mayor stated t«at the Borough Council would take abslhtte control of the bath wlum constructed. EAfter some further discussion, and several promises of subscriptions, Mr F. Yates nf-ved, and Mr J. M. Douglass seconded, tapt the meeting approved of the proposal, ai 1 of the balance of money required beir ; raised by public subscription. The m tion was carried unanimously, and it was d< sided further that the matter of raising tl i funds be left in the hands of the School C mmittee and Borough Council jointly. Al ■ Richardson stated that already about £ 3 had been promised, of which one of the la gest industries in the borough had given
