ANGLING.
Mr W. J. Alpe hns received the following reports as to the success of various anglers daring the season :-Mr W. Pateraan, of Belfast, secured during the week, in the Waimakariri, twelve llsli, weighing in the. SQlbs, tho largest being SID, all Mr F. P. Moorhouae mentions in a letter that, he got twenty-one trout of 16lb weight, all on tho fly, on Saturday last, in the Upper belwyn. Another basket of five fish, Blbs, was also taken in the same place. Messi s Con. Haar and C. Opie Rot tsu fish in the Rangitata on Monday, weighing 30ibs. Two gentlemen in the Wattii got eighteen fish and another seven. Mr S. Rose got, in the Avon, during eight days , fishing, as under .—Three fish, one 2£lbs, andtwol|lb each jelevenfish,total 161bs ; three fish, total 2£lbs ; two l|lb and lib each; two iish, each 21bs; two fish, each l^lbs; one fish 2£lbs ; two fish, 31ba and lib. The following is a record of nehing in the Avon by Messrs P. J. and U. J. Molloy and M. O'Brien:—Messrs Mol-loy-Mvo ffidi 71be, four fish lib each, three fish Jib-.each, sis fish lib each, eight fish 7lbs total, four fish 41bs, three fish Site, eighteen fish fib each, two fish 21bs and 31bs ; Mr M. O'Brien, fonrhsh 91b each, two fish lib each, fdur fish fllbs each. In the Hcathcole, Mr P. J- Molloy got the following fish :—One fish slbs, one fish 2lbs. In the Rakaia and other streams in the Leeston district, the following takes were recorded:—Messra Burke, one fish 9.bs ; Brook, one fish lib; Brown, five fish 151I)S: Rev. Griffin, tin cc fish 6lbs; Limb, one fish lib ; Deuby, nine fish3Ubs; London, three fish bibs; Overtoil, four fish 91bs; and R. P. Hill, two fish 4lbs. In the Lower Selwyn, on the 10th instant, Messrs James C.usack and James Staplelon got eleven fish, the la'gest being 4lbs and the smallest 21bs; H. H. Kimber, fifteen fish 581bs, the largest 9lbs; C. Kimber, five fish, the largest 61bs; aud a Sprine;ston angler thirteen fish, average 4lbs. The Aehburton, Rakaia and Rangitnta fivers will be nnn'shable for several days, ihe nor'-wester and heavy rains in the back ranges having put these streams in partial flood, and made the waters very thick. The Waihi ari'i Opihl are in better eon-Htion. The Waimakariri was in a very flooded condition on Thursday night and yesterday morning from the rain on the ranges. It backed up very much in the north channel, and there will be no trout fishing for some days. The north branch of the Ashburton river is still very thick, and will not t>e fisbuble for a day or two. The southern stream is clear, but the water is very muddy from the junction of the streams just below the traffic bridge "to the sea. The streams south of the Eangitata tothe sea are in nice condition. ■•.' ■ . -■ ■ •
Messrs W. J. Alpe and a friend made a nice catch, in the Ashley on Thursday, of six trout, which were on exhibition yesterday. The aggregate, weight was 22£ Ib, and the fish individually weighed 71b, s£lb, <Sj|lb, Alb, 21b, and lib.
