To be had from all Merchants, Grocers, Storekeepers and Confectioners. HIGHEST AWARD CHICAGO 1893 iIODERN BOOT MAKING MACHINERY. THE advancement .made in Machinery for Warfare and Manufacturing Purposes has, within the last few years, made most rapid strides, and this improvement is more remarkable in the Machinery used in the Boot Trade. ' It is very interesting to note the inventions that have been made in this particular line, as they have been made to lessen labour and cheapen the price of Boots and Shoes, for when the Boots are first started to bo made they hardly leave the Machine till they aro turned out fit to be worn. What a contrast to the old style, when it took a man almost a day to complete a single pair, which can now be done in a few minutes.

The sewing machines are driven by power, the old treadle system being a tking of the past, and one stitch to five hundred per minute can be put in by merely touching a lever. The eyelets are put in as fast as one can count them, and another machine can fasten one dozen buttons before one could thread a needle. The soles are cut out by two machine; one forces a large steel die through the sole instantaneously to any shape or size required, the other has a travelling knifo, which runs round the pattern at a most rapid speed. A very complicated machine is used for fastening the uppers to the inner soles; it pulls tho upper over the last to the place required, and at the same time drives tho tacks into the soles, thus securely fastening the upper to the inner sole; capability, 3000 pairs per week. The soles are sewn on by another machine in a few seconds, or if to be rivetted, they are sent to a different machine, which drives brass or iron rivets any size at the rate- of two hundred per minute. The • heels are put on by a most powerful machine, as by one stroke the heel is securely nailed with' as many. nails as may be required; capability, 1000 • per day. • The boot is then passed to another wonderful machine, which makes its own nails from a coil of wire to any length or shape required, and the naile are ahot into the heels or soles as rapid as a quick-firing gun; capability, 2000 pairs per day. If it is a heavy boot it is sent to the hobnailing machine, which drives the nails at the rate of two hundred, and fifty per minute. The boot is now made and ready for the finishing department. The heel-trimming which haa'revblvingkniv^s'iAvelling at a terrific rate, trims the heels-nice and smooth in a few seconds; capability, 500 pairs per day. Another machine, also having travelling knives for trimming the edges of the soles and making them ready for polishing; capability, 500 .pairs per day. The heels and edges are then stained black or tan, and passed to several machines for polishing. The boot is now practically finished, with the exception of the soles, which are sand-papered, cleaned, and polished off. One would naturally think all these macKnes, planing, sand-papering, etc., would cause a deal of dust, but this is all carried off in pipes fixed to each machine, which empty themselves into one largo pipe or tank, and carried by a strong current of air into the furnace. One can now see that the labour on a pair of boots i? reduced to a mere fraction, compared to the old system, as they are made more solid, and better finished. The well-known firm of Maine Bros., High street, Christchurch, have imported from America and England all the foregoing up-to-date machinery, and have again reduced the prices of their Boots and Shoes. People buying from them buy at the manufacturers' pi ices. No two or three getting a profit. Call and see the goods before buying elsewhere. All made on the most modern and fashionable American Lasts.
