Land Sal_.— We wish to dray? the attention of our readers to a very important sale of land at Waimate, which has for some time paat been advertised in our columns, and which will take place at Studholme Junction on Thursday, October 24th. There appears still to be a really good demand for sm-11 farms of first-class quality, and tbe land to be offered is, we believe, equal to the best iv the Eileamere and Kaiapoi districts. We have little doubt that if such land were for sale in the last-mentioned places, »6 would be keenly competed for. With a railway running right through the property, and with a market for grain and sheep, and freezing works equal to any in the country, there should be little trouble.iv disposing of land of such quality. Anyhow, ib will be * fair test of whether there i» such a demand for really good land as we are given to understand exists. Fxa_—About half-past three o'clock yesterday af.ernoon •* fire broke out in the roof of the house occupied by Mr Bourne, the Bead Master of Christ's College. An alarm was givon and the Brigade turned out promptly, and the chemical engines were able to extinguish the flames before muon damage was done. The fire was apparently caused by a spark from a heap of ourniflg rubbish on the bank of the river a shore distance northward of the house. One ot the steamers was stationed at the Armagh street bridge and the water turned on, but by that time all danger was over. In addition,. to the hole burned in the roof some sligfl» damage has been done by water to the interior of the dormitory beneath.

General Booth's Social Scheme.— General Booth, wheu speaking concerning the principles of hi 3 social scheme, said :— " 1 was trying to show them to the Premier the other day. and I largely succeeded in convincing him. You know I can convince anybody who is convinceable, because I am right. I know' I am." This report of the General was received by his followers with the usual fusilade of volleys. City Improvements —In less than twelve months tt considerable improvement has been effected ia the northern end of the city. On Salisbury street, between Colombo and Manchester streets, a paddock which for year 3 hid been given over to the graz-.ng of cattle and horses has been cut up into about twenty sections, nearly all of which are now built upon. Very substantial and neat-looking modern cottages, of fro-a four rooms and upwards, have been put up, thus greatly improving the value of the property and adding to the attractiveness of that portion of the city. | The Tuam Street Drain.—The Linwood Borough Council are no more forward than ever iv their agitations concerning the notorious Tuam street drain and the drainage of the Etst belt. The City Council has offered to construct a culvert across the East belt if the Linwood Council and tho Drainage Board will put the Tuam screet drain in proper order, but the last named body replies it has no funds for the purpose, aud the Linwood Council are also not in a position to do the work. There the matter ends at present. THE LICENSING LAW. At Auckland yesterday, at a meeting of the Executive of the Prohibition and Temperance League the following resolution was passed, to be forwarded to the Premier, " That the Executive requests the Government to insist on their Liquor Bill as passed by the House of Representatives, and if possible pass it into law this session." GOVERNMENT AND THE BANK. A London merchant, of high position in the City, writing to a friend in Christchurch by the last San Franoisco mail, says :—" lam very glad to have your report on financial matters, but I should say all business in New Zealand, beyond the absolute needs of the d»y, ia hung up Your Government may have very pretty plans for getting a State Bank cheap, when the shareholders of the Bank of New Zealand have been squeezed quite dry; but their constant pottering with that unfortunate institution is destructive of confidence, without which there can be no profitable busino9s." THE CASE OF CHEMIS. The documents submitted by Mr Jellicoe in support of his application on behalf of Chemis, which was. refused, include a long affidavit by Mrs Chemis, reiterating many of the allegations which were brought forward in the charge of perjury against the police. She also lays stress on the fact that if the trial had occurred two months later, both Bhe a,nd Chemis could have given evidence, and' that they and their children were the only ones who could state where i he was on the night of the murder. It is ' also urged once more that other people were on terms of the greatest enmity towards Hawkins, and two of them have since left I the colony. Oue of them is particularly | suggested as the possible criminal. There was an attempt of some sort at the trial, I but it was not persevered in, and little attention was paid to it. It is understood that another Bill will be introduced next session to give Chemis a new trial.
