MINING INTELLIGENCE.

There has been considerable excitement in mining circles during the past few days owing to the discovery, and reported discovery, of various new golden leads ' in this district, and the addition to the population has been very large. On Moonlight Lead the prospectors have found still richer ground, both above and below their original prospecting shaft, and the most serious drawback to the successful working of the ground has been the great scarcity of water. One party a short distance above the prospectors' claim was lately offered £l2O for his share, which he refused, a fact by which a fair opinion may formed of the richness of the ground iu the locality. Between the prospectors' and the hiil, a second payable bottom has been discovered, and everybody on the ground is in high spirits at the present workings, which yield about four ounces per day. The township is very lively. Several stores and butchers' shops seem to be doing a good business, and everything is brisk. A start has just been made at the Four mile Terrace, by Handyside and Party who are about to introduce a puddling machine and stampers, which will be worked by horse-power. Robertson and Party have also started a similar undertaking, on a somewhat smaller scale, which will, however, be worked by hand, with the assistance of a flywheel. These improvements will be a great advantage when completed, and must prove highly remunerative, as the black sand cement, if crushed by the aid of machinery, will yield a mu"h larger profit than it has hitherto done when worked by the old system.
