ORIGINAL AND PICTURESQUE COSTUMES

CHILDREN HOLD FANCY DRESS PARADE

For originality and picturesqueness the costumes worn by children in Wednesday’s parade organised by the Whakatane Carnival Committte, probably set a local record. Among the 100 or so children taking part were some of the bestconceived costumes seen in the town. . The big crowd which watched the parade were particularly enthralled at the sight of a large, bored-look-ing dog drawing Father Christmas on a small cart. The dog was the only uninterested creature in the parade but it may have drawn satisfaction from the fact that it drew a first-prize winner. Another decorated vehicle well Worthy of the prize it secured represented a merry-go-round. With prizes of £2, £1 and 10/- offered in each of five sections, the children had incentive to do their best.

Assembling at the Strand playground, the children were led off by Santa Claus on the fire engine and two youthful pipers, Graham - Bell and George Johnson. From a truck, Mr A. R. Chapman organised the procession by loud speaker. At the Rock, Santa Claus was generous with ice cream and soft drinks. Then the young people were taken to the Winter Show buildings ;for afternoon tea and the noise and games associated with Christmas. Judges of fancy costumes were Miss L. M. Lawes and Mrs V. Peck. Best fancy costume: Girl, Julia Gardiner /lamb) 1, Carol Seebayer (Indian girl), Jocelyn Armstrong (80-Peep) 3. Boy, H. Francis (tin man) 1, Lewis Sayer (snake charmer) 2, Ivan Delahunty (strong man) 3. Decorated vehicle: Girl, Lynette Mullooly (Father Christmas) 1, Jeanette Sayer (Merry-Go-Round) 2, Maida Dodds 3.
