COMING TO AND GOING FROM WHAKATANE
Flow both to and from the Whakatane district this Christmas is, from all portents, likely to be even heavier than in recent years. While many town residents do not propose to go further than Ohope for the holidays, there are many more who plan to travel far afield, by car, rail or bus. Camping holidays are likely to be particularly popular. • There has been a big demand for baches at Ohope, indicating possibly a record inflow from outside districts.
Holiday attractions ‘ at the beach include motorcycle sports on Boxing Day and the carnival on New Year’s Day, plus a series of dances at the Captain’s Cabin and outdoor pictures. Town attractions include the fireworks display next Friday night. Most shops will close tonight, reopen on Tuesday and close again next Friday night. Some businesses will be closed right through the holiday week and a few until January 15. Their purchase of presents almost finished most householders will concentrate on the laying in of holiday provisions. Sustenance of a liquid nature has already been purchased in big quantities, state those, who sell the alcoholic commodity.
