Baker Could Not Always Win
Although he fought out the finai, D. Baker could not continue his winning sequence of 15 wins in 16 successive starts and was defeated by lengths by a crew stroked by G, Moore in the Whakatane Rowing Club’s trial fours for the S. ArmStong Cup. Apart from the final, the preliminary races provided some close finishes. An added feature was a race between crews of high school boys -over a half mile course. Results: — First: G. Moore (str), M. Brown (3), A. Hall (2), P. Bowering (bow) P. Lynds (cox) beat M. Whittaker (str), G. Koea (3), K. Thompson (2),' B. Fitzsimmons (bow), N. Reid (cox), by half a length. Second heat: D. Baker, E. Hunt, K. Bowering, K. Kane, G. Jaram (cox), beat L. O. Stewart, G. Dines, R. Burt, S. Stubbs, K. Delahunty (cox) by a canvas. Final: Moore’s crew beat Baker’s by 3a lengths. Schoolboys’ race: R. Reid, B. Flay, P. Needham, A. Baker, N. Reid (cox) beat T. Reid, N. Palmes, B. Slipper, G. Stevenson, P. Lynds (cox) by two lengths.
