PAID ORGANISER WANTED FOR WAR MEMORIAL
A recommendation that the position of paid secretary-organiser for the Whakatane War Memorial Community Centre scheme be advertised immediately was put forward at a meeting of the Entertainment Committee by the secretary, Mr L. D. Lovelock. He was supported by other members.
Mr Lovelock expressed the opinion that the scheme to raise funds should be underway now. He advocated the employment of a secre-tary-organiser at a retainer fee of £2 a week and five per cent of the money he raised. This would provide the secretary with an incentive to work to raise funds. It was difficult to launch the appeal until Government approval of the suggested memorial was received, said Mr H. G. Warren. Until that was known he did not think any organiser should be employed. Disagreeing with Mr Warren, the Whakatane Rowing Club representative, Mr W. Stuart, said the main concern at the present time was to get the scheme moving and raise funds. It was agreed that Whakatane would have a memorial and to this end funds were urgently needed.
The committee decided to forward Mr Lovelock’s suggestion as a recommendation to the central organising committee. The Mayor, Mr S. S. Shapley, was elected chairman of the Entertainment Committee. An executive elected was: —Treasurer, Mr L. D. Lovelock; Messrs J. Kelsey, R. S. Buttimore, W. Stuart, H. H. Armstrong, R. T. Morpeth, H. L. Drube, S. Merito, T. Hurndell, Mrs G. Otley and Miss K. Armstrong.
