About The Moa
The moa, now extinct was a vast otstrich-like bird which was once hunted in large numbers by the earliest inhabitants of New Zealand. Moas could not fly and the popular theory seems to be that they were chased by relays of runners until they collapsed, .when the hunters clubbed them to death. Patience Empson has recently visited this country to help excavate the skeletons of moas from a swamp and in the BBC programme called “Meet the Commonwealth” she described the work she had done.
