INFLUENCE IN TOWN
The extent of the influence of Whakatane Board Mills Ltd. on the economy of the town is illustrated by the fact that incentive bonuses to be paid on December 7 will amount to nearly £14,000.
This represents an average of £74 for each employee. Looked at another way, it means that money available for distribution will amount to £3 10s for each of the town’s 4000 inhabitants.
Directly, of course, that £3 10s does not come to many of us but, in actuality, that is the extent to which townspeople could benefit from the presence of the mill, quite apart from the big weekly pay cheques. Much of the £14,000 will be spent in the town before Christmas. It would be interesting if an analysis could be made showing how much is spent here and how much away and how much is saved.
Perhaps, some day, Whakatane Board Mills Ltd. could take an example from the State and the sheepfarmers and, to discourage squandering, “freeze” some of the incentive bonus earnings for the later benefit of employees.
