MEMORIAL BREVITIES
When the chairman, Mr H. G. Warren, announced that the Government could not pay all the subsidies in one year but would do so only as funds became available, a voice interjected “What about the wool cheque.” Following upon many suggestions for facilities to be provided in the Community Centre, the chairman said “We have £3O in hand and we need £30,000. (Laughter).
Mr Hurndell again struck a note of enthusiasm. He said, “We should get going and raise half the money and collect the subsidy to finish the job.” It was a question of stressing the bright side and taking the emphasis off the difficulties. He said that population and income had risen in Whakatane since the last carnival in 1945 raised about £2OOO. The attitude should be that whatever the Government decided there would be a War Memorial anyway.
