Two Companies Granted Permits For Race Carrying

Two operators, Ohope Transport Ltd. and McComb & Co. Ltd., applied successfully to the No. 4 Transport Licensing Authority. Mr V. C. Flore, in Whakatane on Wednesday for authority to carry passengers to race meetings. Mr B. S. Barry, for Ohope Transport Ltd., produced evidence from S. Cave and others concerning the demand for the service.

For the Railways Department, it was stated that applications would be made but the Department felt that there was work for the three. The Department could not handle all traffic and would not oppose the present applications. Mr G. Otley, for McComb and Co. Ltd., called G. Tippett to give evidence similar to that given by the other applicant. In both cases, it was said that the demand had, in the past, been partly met by contract hiring of buses? He felt that the racing public should be catered for, said the authority when he granted the applications with a 15-mile pick-up radius.
