No One Wanted The Mongrel

It was only a mongrel and no one wanted it when it was badly injured. It was run over in the Strand and lay yelping until a woman picked it* up and took it to a chemist’s shop. There -it was while chemists tried to get someone to help - it. Police, veterinary surgeon and Borough Council, none could help. No owner could be found. It was late in the day before it had sufficiently recovered to limp away under its own power—with a broken leg.
