Fined For Cruelty To Dogs
For cruelty to dogs, Leonard Hugh Jacobs was fined £lO, with costs 10s, by Mr E. L. Walton, S.M. in the Opotiki Court. He. pleaded guilty. Constable O. J. Elliott said that he had been informed that two dogs had been ill-treated and left unconscious. The incident had been seen by Mr Rumble, the dogs having been beaten with a short thick stick, and one dog was badly mutilated and was left unconscious. It was cut about the mouth. The other dog could not stand up also. Shortly after 7 a.m. that day the Sergeant saw accused on the road. Accused had destroyed one dog that morning pushing him into the river. The other dog was taken by the police and was tied up at the police station. Accused had been droving for the last six years and was well spoken of by stockmen in the district. When questioned by the police he said that he wanted to clear the matter up, and admitted that he had lost his head.
Mr N. V. Hodgson, who represented accused, said that when he arrived at the paddock with a mob of sheep, two of the dogs started to worry the sheep and bit the sheep. This was regarded amongst drovers as an unpardonable sin, and accused completely lost his head. He said now that he did not know how he managed to do it. He had never been in trouble before.
