Meeting of Women’s Institute

The Whakatane Women’s Institute’s meeting was held on November 7. As this meeting every year takes the form of an International Day, the chosen subject was Norway. The speaker for all afternoon was Mr H. Moen, who spoke on his native land. He dealt with all phases of the life and habits of the people. Mr Moen told of the hardships suffered by the Norwegian people during the war and afterwards. He also gave a realistic description of ski-ing in that country. Mr Moen concluded his address by reciting a verse of the Norwegian National Anthem in his native tongue and then translated it into English. The following are the results of the monthly competitions:— Peasant apron, Mrs Comer 1, Mrs Hanham 2; best rose, Mrs Fennell 1, Mrs Hanham 2; broad beans, Mrs Comiskey. Gardening Circle Foregoing its usual monthly meeting the gardening circle motored to Edgecumbe and saw the beautiful orchids in Mr Mark’s garden. On the return journey they called at Mrs Allan Martin’s residence at Awakeri to see the double Wistaria which is blooming there.
