Swimming Club Enjoyed A Good Season

“The club, in my opinion, enjoyed its most successful season to date,” reported the president, Mr J. R. Francis, at the Whakatane Swimming Club’s annual meeting. “This was mainly due to the very co-operation I received from all club officials and also to our policy of gaining experience for our young swimmers by visiting other clubs. The following summary is of interest:—

“Finance: Opening balance £7 13s 3d, membership 292, an increase of 60 odd on the 48/49 season.

“Trophies: McNaughton Cup. This cup was jointly won by Miss Emily McFarland and Miss Mary Kilgour, runners-up being Molly Ault and Meryl Thompson. “Medals: Tiny tots, Patricia Mahy; 7yrs, Don Buttimore; Byrs, David Molesworth; 9yrs, Rex Buttimore; 10yrs, H. Mahy. “Club Champions: Tiny tots, boys, R. Paton; junior, Murray Reid; intermediate (boys) B. Cave. Girls: Tiny tots, Helen Mahy; junior, Nancy Kilgour; intermediate, Joan Chadwick.

“An enjoyable and interesting night’s entertainment was had by about 60 Whakatane Club members at a carnival sponsored and run by the Australian Empire Games team. Seeing these Australians in action was an experience not soon to be forgotten by our young swimmers. “Six outside carnivals were attended, and our swimming teams met with varying success but gained volumes in the art of swimming. “The usual “free for all” on closing day was enjoyed by everyone, many parents being present. “Once again I would like to thank the school committee for the use of the baths, and also instructors and supporters for making the club a successful one. Special thanks to the auditor, Mr R. Riddell.
