Ensilage Making Ensilage making is now in full swing throughout the Bay. Pasture growth in recent weeks has been rapid. Found John Williams, Lands and Survey Department linesman, who was thought to be missing when he did not return from the Matahina bush on Tuesday night, was located on Wednesday morning. Good Fishing Fishing at the Tarawera for three days last weekend Messrs Norman and Eric Jones and Perry Reichardt of Tauranga, returned with 27 trout. Concrete Pathway The construction of a four-feet wide concrete pathway from the western end of the hospital to the domestic staff quarters was decided on at a meeting of the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board yesterday. The pathway will also serve the mortuary. The cost will be about £IOO.
The Library There are 287 subscribers to the Whakatane Public Library, reported the Librarian, Miss A. M. Brodrick, to the committee. The membership, she said, was growing steadily as residents became used to the fact that the library was again open. During the first three weeks since the re-opening, 986 books had been issued and 197 new ones put into circulation.
Hospital Patients There were 104 patients in hospital on November 1, compared with 93 on October 1, reported the medical superintendent, Dr E. T. Dawson, to the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board at its meeting in Whakatane yesterday. There were eight deaths and 49 births during the ' month. Major operations totalled 13 and minor ones 41. The matron, Miss K. Miller, reported that the total nursing staff’ was 43.
Underground Cables A recommendation from the Works Committee that, when power reticulation is laid on at the domestic quarters at the Whakatane Hospital, underground cables be used was discussed by the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board yesterday. The Board discussed a general policy of carrying power underground and refered the recommendation to the Finance Committee with power to act.
