BAY OF PLENTY BEACON Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 8, 1950 MURUPARA PROJECT
The assurance given by the Minister of Forests, Mr Corbett, in the House of Representatives that the Murupara project would definitely be proceeded with is heartening but, like previous Parliamentary spokesmen on this subject, Mr Corbett is not able to say much. There is something a little vague about the Government’s proposals, indeed the Minister himself says that he cannot yet say just what the Government will do. It is not yet certain that the proposed mill will be at Murupara and not somewhere else in the district. No site has yet been acquired. Sources of capital have not been finalised. While the placing of £200,000 on the estimates indicates, as the Minister says, that the Government has not lost sight of the project, it indicates also that plans are not expected to reach an advanced stage within the next year. There is every indication, in fact, that, though Murupara will go ahead, it will do so more slowly than some persons wish.
