WHAKATANE HARBOUR PLANNED 1922
The fact that in 1922, there were plans for harbour development at Whakatane—and one the same as the scheme now being investigated by the Bay of Plenty Harbour Inquiry Committee, and the other for an inside harbour in connection with a freezing works project which later failed, was elucidated by Mr H. O. Cooney, counsel for Tauranga local bodies during his cross-exam-ination of Mr C. H. Brebner consulting engineer to the Whakatane Harbour Board. Mr Cooney described the latter proposals as “antediluvian” and maintained that, as all the capital invested in the Freezing Works had been lost farmers in the Whakatane district would not support the present scheme. To Mr T. E. Henry, counsel for the Whakatane Harbour Board, Mr Brebner said that there was a previous plan, which had never been attempted and knowledge of which he himself had gained only from an old newspaper. The work that was done was river groining to stabilise the channel to the freezing works.
