Eastern Bay Red Cross Centre
Mrs W. Sullivan presided over a meeting of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society on Friday. Delegates from Awakeri, Edgecumbe, Otakiri, Te Teko, Thornton and Whakatane branches were present, as was the Junior Red Cross organiser, Mrs C. B. Balfour. Mrs Sullivan had visited the Pahiatua Camp and the new settlers were grateful for gifts of clothing sent by the New Zealand Red Cross, including five cases from this Centre. Mrs Sullivan was impressed with the courage and excellent manners of these new arrivals, but said it was noticeable how frequently they looked back over their shoulders when talking. Donations made were £3O to the Empire Nurses Memorial Fund, £5 to earthquake relief in India, £2 2s to the V.A.D. Collins Cup competition. Payment of £l5O to headquarters was also approved. Donations of £3O had been forwarded to Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Approval was given to the nomination of a Junior Red Cross delegate to attend the J.R.C. Leadership Camp in Wellington in January. She is Miss Suzanne Briffault of the Whakatane High School, i Mrs Balfour reported there aife now eight Junior Red Cross Circles in the Centre with a membership of 285 children.
The secretary, Mrs Winstone, reported on the annual meeting of the Society held in Christchurch in August.
A donation of £2O from sub-cen-tres had been made to the United Nations Appeal for Children, and Whakatane Red Cross members assisting the Borough street collection for this cause had collected £35 14s sd.
Preliminary arrangements for the Red Cross annual appeal were made.
