Electric Eels Supply Power
Electric eels from the London Zoo are to be used to provide power for neon signs over their aquarium. The electricity generated by these eels has long been the .subject of experiment. It was only some 15 years ago that it was realised that these eels produced far more power than was at first realised. ' Careful tests showed that the eel’s generating plant produces 120 Volts and develops a power of 3 watts. This power is roughly equal to that of a side lamp of a motor car. An eel only a foot long can stun a man. In Brazil repeated shocks from disturbed eels are capable of keeping a person unconscious until drowning occurs. Specimens eight feet long and a foot in diameter are not uncommon. Well, well, what a shocking life they lead.
