WINS FOR UNITED AND P. AND T.

Unsettled weather spoiled the second games of the final round of Whakatane cricket on Saturday. Again the bowlers were well on top and good averages were returned. v UNITED v EDGECUMBE i A lightning 25 by Corcoran gave victory to United in their match with Erigehumbe. Edgecumbe batted first and were dismissed for 95. Top scorers were E. Tunnicliffe 34 and Griffiths 26. W. J. McKenzie took 3 for 20 and Le Pine 3 for 3J. The first wicket fell for 14 when K. Tunnicliffe was bowled by McKenzie for 6. A second wicket stand between E. Tunnicliffe and Griffiths yielded 50 runs before Tunnicliffe was run out for 34. The remaining batsmen failed against the acurate bowling of McKenzie and Le Pine and the following batsmen could add only 31 more runs betwen them. United had a rather scratchy start and three wickets fell for 15 runs.

W. J. McKenzie and Bull managed to stop the rot for a while and a fifth wicket partnership between them resulted in 42 runs. Wickets fell regularly after Bull was dismissed by Thurlow until Corcoran r and J. McKenzie pulled the game out of the fire with an eighth wicket stand of 25. The last wicket fell with the total at 112. P. & T. v HIGH SCHOOL P. and T. defated High School on the first innings by 164 to 85. Top scorers for P. and T. were McCready 30, Burt 52 and Monro 22. For High School Lyons 36 and Grey 11. Lyons who was playing his first game for the season made an excellent beginning taking 5 wickets for 27 as well as being his side’s top scorer. P. and T. batted first and soon had 100 on the board for the loss of only 3 wickets and it was not until the fall of the fifth wicket that the bowlers had much encouragement. However the P. and T. tail failed to wag and were all out for 164.

High School batsmen did not appear to at all confident and McCready and Cleland soon got in amongst them. Only the stand by Lyons showed any aggression.
