State Buys 2260 Farm Units For Ex-Servicemen
The State took or bought by negotiation 2260 farm units for ex-ser-vicemen „between the passing of the Land Sales Act in 1943 and March last.
Three hundred and eighty units totalling 115,734 acres were compulsorily acquired and 440 units taken under the section of the Act which enables the Crown to intervene when property transactions come before land, valuation committees. „
These figures are given in the annual report, on the settlement of Crown lands.
The number of units purchased by voluntary negotiation was 1440 totalling 797,779 acres. Compulsory acquisitions fell from 127 units in 1948-49 to 42 units last year.
Although the overall number of ex-servicemen taking part in ballots for land is still comparatively high, the report says, there is an increasing tendency for applicants to concentrate on more attractive properties in selected districts. There has been less interest in some of the bigger store sheep and grazing properties where applicants are required to deposit a substantial amount toward the cost of their establishment.
