New Hope For Oil Discovery In New Zealand
Developments in the technique of oil exploration have renewed scientists’ hopes for the discovery of oil in New Zealand. This is what six geologists and geophysicists who worked in the last unsuccessful quest told Dr E. Marsden, New Zealand scientific liaison officer in London, when they met him recently in Canada. “They expressed the opinion that the past investigations New Zealand’s oil-producing potentialities were by no means conclusive,” said Dr Marsden. New knowledge of earth structures and improved boring techniques meant that exploration in New Zealand could be taken much further than previously. It was now admitted by scientists that sites for bores drilled 10 years ago were selected on the basis of faulty interpretation of sub-surface strata. At the invitation of the Government, two geologists are coming to New Zealand soon to make a new survey of the oil production potential.
