OFFICIAL VIEW OF DEVELOPMENT OF MURUPARA
The proposal for the establishment of a State sawmill and a pulp and paper mill by the State Forest Service at Murupara was the subject of a detailed examination by the Director of Forestry in 1948, stated the Commissioner of Works report presented to the Port Inquiry Committee on Wednesday. As a corollary, there were certain essential services which would come within the scope of the Ministry of Works to plan and execute. These works involved the establishment of a town at Murupara, a branch railway between Edgecumbe and Murupara; a branch line between Mount Maunganui and the waterfront of the Mount; harbour works at the Mount; an electric power supply to mills and town at Murupara; housing at Mount Maunganui; and land for an aerodrome, port and other development.
