READERS CONSIDER

THE SHOWGROUNDS Sir, —Your leading article under „ the title “Showground ‘Trouble” discusses only one side of the position and Mr Cobbe has clearly put the other side. If members of the A. and P. Association desire to shift it is entirely their own business. Should they do so the amalgamation with the Winter Show Association could still take place but it would be of no earthly benefit to either body. Amalgamation would be a help only if the two bodies were holding their respective shows on adjacent areas and each could use the buildings, property and equipment owned by the other. The holding of a show in the Domain once a year is no more unhygienic than it would be if held anywhere else and the presence of the stock for a couple of days annually would be quite a tonic for the sward. The amalgamation of the two bodies involves such obvious advantages to both associations and to the various sports bodies that the proposal should not be thrown overboard lightly, but those people who had visualised a grandstand serving the A. and P. Association, the Winter Show and various sports bodies, see it receding into the distance. The question of amalgamation has been under consideration for so many years without making progress, that the time has arrived when it could be studied by new sub-committees who might develop a different approach and get the question settled one way or the other. The present position is that the A. and P. Association occupy an area of the Domain the lease ofwhich still has some years to- run, but it is very desirable that they decide their future policy definitely before ideas are finalised for the Community Centre building now planned for the Domain. Yours etc., “GRANDSTAND” Whakatane, November 2, 1950.
