Food premises, buildings and premises in Taneatua were among the subjects reported on by the health inspector, Mr ft. D. Sterling, to the Whakatane County Council yesterday. His report read: —

Food Premises: Inspections have been carried out and the serving of notices requesting improvements followed up. While it was noted that proprietors were endeavouring to comply with the requisitions served, great difficulty is experienced in having certain work requiring tradesmen carried out. The enforcement of “bread wrapping’’ is proving somewhat cifficult and in several instances, retailers have been warned twice.

Inspections of bread vans have been carried out and in one instance verbal instructions were given redust-proofing. Twenty-eight inspections were cari’ied out.

General Inspections: Further inspections of public halls have been carried out and to date no improvements have been made to the Te Whaiti and Te Teko Halls. The owner of the Te Whaiti hall on being interviewed stated that proper conveniences would be provided sometime, she would give no definite date, and although I provided a plan of a suitable privy she gave no satisfaction in regard to when the necessary privies would be fitted.

Since the last Council meeting Mr Rondon, licensee of the Te Teko hall, has stated he would not be carrying out the improvements and now he again states he shall. One of the owners of the hall Mr R. G. Park interviewed me re the hall and stated that provided he could close the hall the improvements would be carried out.

Verbal instructions were given to the proprietor of the Te Teko billiard saloon re the provision of suitable privies and repairs to premises. Eighteen inspections were carried out.

Plumbing and Drainage: Four new ssptic systems have been installed. A total of ten drainage and plumbing inspections were carried out; in one instance defective work was noted. Interviews: A total of 70 interviews took place mainly concerning work on hand; a number dealt with the clearing of sections at Ohope Beach.

Letters: Sixteen forwarded mainly in regard to the clearing of sections at Ohope Beach. Notices 12: 'Nine re the clearing of sections Ohope Beach; one re improvements to dwellings; one re Te Teko Hall; one re faulty building erection.

Fire Inspections: (Fjve). Have been carried out to ascertain if reasonable protection is being provided for necessary fires during the closer season.

Plans: Three have been provided, two different types of privies; also a suitable layout for a public hall.

Infectious Diseases: Four cases have been notified during the period. Two Bacillary Dysentery, one Para-typhoid, one suspect Poliomylitis (deceased). Building Inspections: Twentythree building inspections were carried out. In one instance defective work was noted, and after consultation with the engineer we decided it was necessary to issue a notice calling on the builder to cease work on the erection.

The following is the type and value of buildings for which permits have been taken out between September 16 and October 14, 1950: Dwellings 1, £1697; dwellings (temporary) 1, £400; additions to dwellings 2, £1275; hay barns 2, £290; garages 2, £l9o;alter shop premises 1, £9; commercial temporary additions) 1, £l6 10s; re-erect dwelling 1, £3OO. £4,227 10s.
