Bus Hits Drum Of Petrol

When it hit a large drum of petrol near Edgecumbe, the early morning Rotorua-Whakatane through bus to Gisborne was delayed for a short while. There was no damage and nobody was injured.. The accident occurred as the bus was approaching Edgecumbe. A farm truck had moved across to the side of the road to allow the bus room to pass when a drum of petrol on the back of the vehicle rolled directly in the path of the bus. The bus crashed into it and the drum burst sending a shower of petrol over the vehicle. The driver immediately switched off the engine and passengers smoking cigarettes needed no urging to put them out.

Passengers left the bus in case of fire but as soon as the petrol had dried the journey was resumed to Whakatane without further incident.
