A senior and junior Maori Rugby team frorp Tauranga representing the Mata-atua canoe, travelled to Ngaruawahia last week and played Rugby in the games organised in conjunction with the sexcentennial celebrations of the arrival of the ten canoes from Hawaiki in 1350. The second team played an elimination match against Hauraki (Hauraki Plains) having an overwhelming victory by 51 points to nil. Mata-atua scored 14 tries, three conversions and one penalty. Outstanding players in the match were R. Gardiner and B. Kahotea who showed form close to that which gained him the reputation of being one of ■ the best backs playing in Tauranga about four years ago. By its success the Mata-atua team earned the right to issue the first challenge next season for the King Koroki Cup which is at present held by Tauroria (Taumarunui) who defeated Pikiao (Rotorua). The junior Mata-atua team was defeated by Ardmore by 12 points to three. J. Cooney and J. Tapiata were the best of the Tauranga players.
Both teams were selected, coached and managed by Messrs P. Rinnui and R. Rorotana.
